Stop Telling Stories and Just Preach the Bible!!!
I believe we have a crisis in churches today: a crisis of true Bible preaching. Some men are gifted speakers who can hold a crowd with stories for an hour and a half, and people walk away saying it was interesting. But the real question is whether they did what God told them to do when they stood in the pulpit.
Paul's charge to Timothy is plain: preach the word, be instant in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine (2 Timothy 4:2). Paul warned that the time would come when people would not endure sound doctrine, would heap to themselves teachers having itching ears, and would be turned unto fables. When a church loses its appetite for thus saith the Lord, the speaker has to fill the gap with entertainment.
In this video I react to a clip shared on X by Protestia, where Transformation Church pastor Tim Ross describes himself as one of the most gifted storytellers God has ever put on the earth and says his anointing is on his storytelling, not on walking through a book like Ephesians line by line. That is backwards. The Holy Spirit and the Holy Scriptures never disagree, and it is the Scriptures, not our stories, that change lives.
This is not only a problem out in the megachurch world. Independent Baptist pulpits have had their share of great storytellers too. My motto going forward is simple: give me the Bible or sit down. Church people ought to ask for more Scripture in the sermons, and the next generation needs Bible truth handed down to them, not our stories.
